Openwork square crochet summer top made with yellow Alize Diva yarn

Size & fit

Size One size (as shown)
Fits body bust approx. EU 38–40 (bust ~84–92 cm), worn relaxed
Finished bust (garment) ~150 cm (two 75 cm panels) — intentionally oversized/drapey
Finished length 48 cm
To resize add or remove full 14-chain repeats (~7.5 cm each)

This is a deliberately loose, boxy summer top (great as a beach layer). For a closer fit, remove one or more 14-chain repeats from the foundation.

Finished measurements

The top is two identical rectangles (front and back). Finished, after pressing, each panel is about 75 cm wide × 48 cm long, with about 24 cm from hem to underarm and the top edge split as 25 cm shoulder + 25 cm neck opening + 25 cm shoulder.

Materials

Gauge & terminology

This pattern uses UK crochet terms: “double treble crochet (dtr)” here equals US “treble crochet (tr)”.

Gauge (estimated): one pattern repeat — a 7-dtr block plus one chain-7 mesh space (14 chains, 4 rows) — measures about 7.5 cm wide with a 3 mm hook in Diva; the pressed panel is ~48 cm long. These figures are estimated from the schematic, not lab-tested — always crochet a swatch first and change hook size until your panel reaches ~75 cm wide.

Stitch pattern

One repeat = 14 chains and 4 rows.

  • Row 1: Ch 4 (counts as first dtr). Work 1 dtr into the first foundation chain, then 6 more dtr (7 dtr total). *Ch 7, skip 7 foundation chains, work 7 dtr starting in the 8th chain.* Repeat * to * to the end of the row.
  • Row 2: Repeat Row 1.
  • Row 3: Ch 10, then *work 7 dtr over the ch-7 space of the previous row, ch 7.* Repeat * to * to the end of the row.
  • Row 4: Repeat Row 3.

Repeat Rows 1–4 for the pattern (this forms the open “squares”).

Instructions

Foundation / width: Chain a multiple of the 14-chain repeat plus 7 (so the row ends on a solid block). For the ~75 cm width shown, chain 133 (= 14 × 9 + 7 → 10 blocks and 9 mesh spaces). Note: the original Alize chart prints “138”, but 138 is not an exact multiple of the repeat — use 133 (or 147 for a wider top) and adjust to your gauge.

Front: Chain the foundation and establish the stitch pattern, working to a finished length of about 48 cm after pressing. Note: the chart’s “work to 72 cm” doesn’t match the 48 cm finished length (microfiber relaxes rather than shrinking by a third), so work to your own measured 48 cm using the gauge above and check against the schematic.

Back: Work exactly as for the Front.

Assembly & finishing: Steam and press both pieces evenly without pressing too hard, easing them to the same size by hand. Join the shoulders and sides by sewing or crocheting, leaving the centre 25 cm open for the neck and the upper sides open for the armholes, as shown in the schematic.

FAQ

How much Alize Diva do I need?

About 3 balls (100 g / ~350 m each) in colour 187. Add 3 balls to cart →

What hook size and gauge?

A 3 mm hook. The stitch pattern repeats over 14 chains and 4 rows (~7.5 cm per repeat, estimated); swatch first and adjust hook size to reach the ~75 cm panel width.

How many chains do I start with?

Chain a multiple of 14 plus 7 — 133 for the ~75 cm width shown. (The printed chart says 138, but 133 divides evenly into the repeat.)

Does it use US or UK crochet terms?

UK terms. “Double treble (dtr)” here equals US “treble (tr)”.

What size is it?

One size, a relaxed oversized fit — the sample suits about EU 38–40 worn loose. Finished bust ~150 cm; remove 14-chain repeats to size down.

Can I use a different yarn?

Yes — any smooth sport/DK yarn with good drape. For a matte cotton look, try Alize Cotton Gold.

How do I wash it?

Alize Diva is machine washable on a gentle, cool cycle; dry flat to keep the openwork even.
