Plant hangers, wall hangings, bags and coasters are knotted from macrame cord, a firm strand that holds the shape of each knot; shops also call it macrame yarn. Soft yet durable, cotton cord is popular in neutral earth tones and forest greens.
For wall hangings and plant hangers, choose YarnArt Macrame Cotton, 85% cotton, with 225 m (246 yd) per 250 g for cutting long working cords; YarnArt Macrame is a polyester cord for bags and decor, and YarnArt Papiro is raffia paper for baskets and summer bags.
Cord length depends on the pattern, the number of knots and the fringe, and a cord folded in half gives two working ends of half the length, so cut with a margin or follow the pattern. Brush out a short test end before planning a combed fringe.
