How many balls of DROPS Kid-Silk for a sweater?

An adult sweater in size M usually needs 5–7 balls of DROPS Kid-Silk when held with another yarn. You use about as many metres of mohair as of the main yarn, typically 1,000–1,400 m, and each 25 g ball holds 210 m, so 1,000–1,400 m ÷ 210 m gives 5–7 balls.

Is DROPS Kid-Silk itchy?

Most knitters find it soft, as it uses fine kid mohair with silk, but a few people with sensitive skin feel a slight tickle from any mohair. Wear a test swatch against your neck for a few minutes. If it prickles, a mohair-free fuzzy yarn such as Gazzal Navarra, made of acrylic and polyester, avoids the issue.

What yarn can I hold with DROPS Kid-Silk?

Almost any smooth yarn works. As a rule of thumb, a strand of Kid-Silk adds roughly one yarn weight, so fingering plus Kid-Silk knits like DK, and DK plus Kid-Silk like aran. DROPS Safran gives a cool cotton-mohair fabric, while DROPS Lima makes a warm winter one. Always swatch the pair together.

DROPS Kid-Silk vs DROPS Brushed Alpaca Silk: which should I choose?

Choose Kid-Silk to add halo to another yarn, and Brushed Alpaca Silk for a fuzzy sweater from a single strand. Kid-Silk is lace weight, 75% mohair with 210 m per 25 g. DROPS Brushed Alpaca Silk is 77% alpaca and knits alone to an aran gauge, with 140 m per 25 g.
